1. Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls
Demon’s Soul inspired a whole new subgenre of games and launched a spiritual successor, Dark Souls, two years later. Developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki of FromSoft in 2009 and 2011 respectively, these two games offer teeth-grinding challenges for determined players. Death is a common aspect of most video games, and the players must learn how to evade dying at the hands of their enemies to progress further. This game, however, takes that concept a little too seriously. It’s so easy to die in-game that the “YOU DIED” message on the screen gets seared into your brain. Online, players were encouraged to leave tips and tricks on how to defeat their insidious opponents after they died so that the next player would have a fighting chance!
